Kenya Safaris: Do's and Don'ts While on Tour

By parrishkarli at 2012-05-28 23:42:15
So you've finalized your plans for a dream holiday to Kenya and it includes several days of safari, with stopovers at lodges or campsites, superb wildlife viewing and photo opportunities, some shopping for souvenirs and a taste of the local cuisine and wines, a chance to meet with the traditional dwellers of the Savannah and you're looking forward to fun and adventure.

Packing right is priority number one. Remember you're traveling to an equatorial country which can be extremely hot even in the dry season and humid if you're visiting coastal areas. Layering is a great plan, since nights can get a little chilly in the veld. Keeping your arms and legs covered while walking prevents insect bites and plant allergies. Always keep your head covered when you're outdoors and wear sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen. Do wear neutral colors with the least amount of jewelry or trinkets. Do wear sensible shoes. If you use contact lenses, remember the safari route can be very dusty, so opt for glasses with photo chromatic lenses and carry a couple of extra pairs.

Drinking plenty of water is something you must force yourself to do. Don't drink the tap water on safari and bottled drinks are better than fresh juices especially for children, seniors and those with weak digestion. The food all over Kenya is great, with fresh meat, game and vegetables cooked tastefully but do eat only at clean, more crowded places.

Keep your valuables/passport/money with you at all times and do not display your money-pouch/purse or wear it round your waist. It is not safe to move around the streets in Kenya on your own and be careful about picking up casual acquaintances. Exchange money only at reputed establishments.

Be sensible about photography. Stay as quiet as possible while on safari and take pictures discreetly. Never click pictures of locals or the Masai without their permission. Respect the local customs and traditions. Talking/laughing loudly, singing, yelling, screaming are all strict no-no's while on safari.

Try not to bring infants/babies/toddlers or your cell phone on safaris as they may cause distractions and disturb others and the wildlife.

Respect the jungle and the veld. Don't litter and don't venture out alone. Never throw food to animals or wander around picking up plants or rocks.

Stay calm and quiet throughout the trip so that any animals you see will not sense your excitement or fear. In Kenya the safari roads and paths are usually bumpy so be prepared for some discomfort.

Keeping these important do's and don’ts in mind while on tour can prevent your dream vacation from turning into a nightmare trip!
